It must be very hard to choose only one, but I would go with a cat.

*cough*SNAKESNAKESNAKESNAKE*cough*
I think he's being rather sensible - it's hard to care for more than one animal at a time. Corn snakes are very cheap and easy to care for, though - about $10 a month to keep one, and theyjust need to be fed once a week (varies depending on age) and have their cage cleaned regularly.

I choose cat. I have 2 cats, and 2 dogs cats are easier. I siuggest going to an adoption or pound for a cat perferabbly one that is spayed/nuetered all ready also an older one.

Snakes can be a pain though, especially since they do weird things and you don't know what's wrong with them. Snake illnesses are hard to identify and harder to treat.
My friend raises snakes and her favorite baby just decided to stop eating for a few months. 0_o There was nothing wrong with her that they could find, she just decided not to eat whatever was offered. She was slowly wasting away and then finally she just started eating again, out of nowhere.
Snakes are strange animals in captivity...

Well, whatever you decide to get, I suggest an adoption center, or the pound. The animals there really need a home, vs. the animals breeders have have always had a home. Even if it wasn't perminant.
I have a dog, Molly, who came from an adoption center. She was really shy at first, but then like, two or three days later she was getting along great with our other two dogs. And our ill cat, Shadow, who my dad found on the side of the road one night. We adopted Shadow, but she had to be put to sleep because of natural causes. But anyway, back to Molly. She got along great with our other cat, Aero, too!
Today, actually, we went with my grandma to adopt a dog. From the same adoption center as Molly! The new dog's name is Honey. She is so sweet! She is a little Yorkie, who, like Molly, has a really sad story. But she is just a little princess!
It's my personal opinion it is always better to adopt. The animals need to get homes, they want to be with loving, caring families.
Sorry, I just had to put some opinions and experiences in. I think it helps a little with decision making, opinions and experiences. ^^
Good luck!
