As most of you know, I'm one of the many people here who likes (or rather, loves) Japan. <3 I think I've said a couple times that I'm trying to learn Japanese, and that, considering I'm teaching myself, it's going rather well.
So here I am, all proud and anxiously awaiting high school. And I'm especially excited for the Japanese class in high school, which I was planning to take. Until Thursday, that is.
On Thursday at lunch, some of th more popular high school elective's representatives were in the court yard, sort of 'advertising' for the classes. These representations included German, French, Industrial Tech, ROTC, Agriculteral Care, Japanese, and Manderin Chinese.
I love Chinese, but not nearly as much as Japanese. I know that they are somewhat related, but I find Japanese to be a more fun language and to have a more fun culture (not that I have studied Chinese much, but no less).
Anyway, so I got home on Thursday and I showed my mom the papers and she showed them to my dad. My parents talked about it, then my mom asked me if I wanted to take Japanese or Chinese more. I said that I want to take Japanese, but since I want to be a linguistic, and I'll be learning both at some point, anyway, I'd probably end up doing whatever they suggested.
So they talked with one of the board members for their company who is very well educated in many subjects. He suggested that I take Chinese to begin with, because Chinese is such a popular language now-a-days.
It looks like I'll be taking Chinese next year, then. But I'm kind of fifty-fifty happy on this one, because, while Chinese is a great language, I've been looking forward to learning more Japanese and being able to speak it fluently over time. Plus, I just don't like China or their language like I like Japan and Japanese.
I had also been looking at being a translater for a future job (overall I want to be a linguistic, but I'd love to be a translater). Mainly, I want to be able to translate Japanese, and I can see how Chinese would be useful, but yet, I think I'd have more fun with Japanese.
Okay, so there's my little mini-rant/breather.
I know what I'm going to do (I'll take Chinese the first year, then Japanese the next three years, when I have more electives), but if someone would like to give their advice, I'd appreciate it, no less.
