This is the intro story I wrote for an adoptable I'm trying to start. I have the male lineart drawn, though there are some parts of it I'm not happy with, so you'll be seeing it for redlining in a few days. I intend to draw the female tinight, and the babies this weekend. I'll show you the lineart Tuesday or Wednesday after I get Dad to scan it at work.
Edit: By the way, it's a gryphon-type adoptie.
Anyway, here's the intro. Comments are appreciated.
I was standing with Wings of Glory in a secluded corner of the island, enjoying the sunset across the water. It was a lovely night, the air was crisp and clean, and the water sparkled under the last rays of the sun.
Suddenly, the air darkened, and a harsh wind appeared from nowhere. Trying desperately to hold my hair out of my eyes, I felt compelled to turn and look toward the rock face behind the beach. I was unsurprised to find that Glory had also turned, and faced as I did. Glory’s violet eyes were fixed on something, and I followed his gaze, to be caught in the magical whirling of color and light in front of the cliff.
Something stirred in the swirling pool of magic, just as Glory’s neigh split the air. A thunder of hooves responded, but I barely heard. All my attention was on the shape forming from the light. A creature burst out and turned immediately to face the magic, as we did. She was closely followed by five more creatures, two carrying wrapped bundles, heavy by the way they hampered movement.
Then, as suddenly as it had begun, it was over. The wind died, the light was as would have been expected for evening, and the swirl of color dimmed to black. I sensed that nothing more would come through this night, so I turned my attention to the feathered and furred creatures that stood in front of me.
While I was trapped in the magic, Glory’s call had brought more Winged Unicorns from about the island, and they had spread to encircle the newcomers. I noted Voice of Warriors, Midnight Warrior, Angelic Warrior, and Winged Warrior before turning my attention away.
Before I could speak, the first to arrive asked quietly, almost fearfully, “To what manner of land have we come?”
I, with Wings of Glory to one side and Winged Warrior to the other, answered without fear. “This is d’evarai rhierea, an island of Azuyan. If you come in peace, you are welcome here.” Glory nodded his agreement, though Midnight snorted in defiance.
“Thank you, great lady.” The speaker’s relief was plain in her tone, in her eyes, in the relaxing of feathers I hadn’t noticed to be tensed. “I and mine have run far enough, and can go no farther.” She started to add more, but I interrupted.
“Can anything else use this portal?” I demanded. Winged Warrior’s head went up sharply as she considered what it might mean if they could.
“Aye.” the speaker sighed. “Aye, but you will have warning if they do. It will take longer to open the portal a second time, though it will not leave the caster so drained. The path is established, and there is nothing I can do to take down the portal from this side.” A single tear traced its way down one feathered cheek. “And the caster is unable to take it down from his side. That which we fled was faster than he.”
“Then we’ll leave a guard on this portal, as you call it, and we’ll go up to the stable to talk.” I put my hand out to touch her cheek comfortingly. “We will discover just what I and mine can do to help you and yours.”
And so, Glory set Midnight Warrior and Angelic Warrior to watch the portal, and I led the six creatures back to my home away from home. Glory, ever untrusting, came along, though the other Winged Unicorns returned to their interrupted activities.
There, the leader of these refugees, for that is what they were, explained how they came to be fleeing, and from what they fled.
