it counts everyone, registered users, guests, invisibles...everyone is counted

plus, people who have tabs, they'll open several, and if they don't close the window when they log out, it registers them each as a different user...i think
i could be completely wrong about that last part

There's also spybots that infiltrate forums like this, pretty standard practice for free forums. The bots are seen as a 'guest' member and usually sit in the background and record the words we write. For example, when Harry Potter 7 came out you can be sure they were recording how many times we talk about Harry Potter, to see how popular it is around the Internet. Just basic marketing stuff like that. Not harmful to our computers, just really annoying.
