Art final WIPs

Well, my art final is due Thursday, and I'm kicking myself into high gear to get it done. I'm doing a floating castle with a landscape, and I'm having a blast so far ^^ Every hour I stop to take a picture of my progress, which is what I want to show off here. It's slow going, but once I get done with the nitpicky details (measuring, making sure that the lines are all straight and the castle is symmetrical), things will go a bit smoother. I can't wait to get started on inking and coloring in watercolors :3

Sorry in advance for the crummy photo quality, the lighting in my room is... less than desirable ^^;

Hour 1 - basic sketch of the castle structure, lots of measuring.

Hour 2 - A bit more measuring as the castle expands, emphasis on adding detail. Falling tree added.

Hour 3 - Finished sketch of the castle and floating chunk of land.

Hour 4 - Inking started on castle.

Hour 5 - More inking - emphasis on more detail and texture on the castle.

Hour 6 - Really starting to have fun with textures, especially on the outer edges of the castle. Inked the falling tree and surrounding environment.

Hour 7 - Finished the detail on the outer wall of the castle and more of the environment.

Hour 8 - Done with the castle, finishing the surrounding environment. Added a bit of texture to the gargoyle, since as a flat creature he looked out of place surrounded by all that detail. Looks better in RL

Hour 9 - Finished inking the castle and floating chunk of land. Began sketching the land and cliffs underneath it.

Hour 10 - Began inking the cliffs, began sketching the first dragon.



Hour 11 - Continued inking cliffs (grass is such a pain to ink), finished sketching dragon and began to ink first dragon. Sketched in a second dragon for more composition effect.



Hour 12 - Finished inking the (really dumb) grass on the cliffs (that took me forever and a half), and continued inking the first dragon.



Hour 13 - Finished inking the first dragon and began inking the second.

Hour 14 - Finished inking the second dragon. Minor last-minute touch-ups before painting.

Hour 15 - Began painting! All of this is watercolor, but only very light washes to keep the detail in the ink visible.



Hour 16

Finished.



The final peice is huge, at least a foot and a half by two feet, if not larger. It got quite a bit of attention when I brought it to school, and someone offered to buy the original from me. I (jokingly) said he would have to have $150 on-hand somewhere, and the next day he told me that he was only $20 short. I'm still wondering if he would have seriously bought it, even if I'm not interested in selling it xD

Hooray for getting it done at 1 am the day it was due!

I just have to add the Fleur De Lis are amazing! (Louisana part of me)

Love the little creature in front of the castle too! And the tree makes a very fine detail!

I did three pages of sketches to get ideas for the castle, and the fleur-du-lis was a reoccuring theme. It must be the French part of me

I love the little creature x3 Whenever I manage to steal my sketchbook back from Jycius I'm going to make a sketchpage for him, because he's such a fun little thing to draw.

Oh, wow that's really gorgeous.
I wish we would have had that much time for our art final, I may have been able to pass. lol

But, Ah that little creature looks so devious. I love him, his little spikes are just unbareably cute.

We've had all break to get started, but of course I'm a procrastinator -and- I had artblock, and I was sick. Bad excuses, I know, but I just didn't get started until now. How much time did you have? O.O You need to have at least... 10 hours to work on a final, according to our art teacher. To put your best effort into it, I mean.

Really 10 hours?
My teacher has to be off her rocker then because she gave us 2. xP
Needless to say we had a two hour period in which we needed to complete a peice of art. I played it safe and made a coke can. xD But I shall show you that once I get it back, which should be tomorrow. ^^

I love the pheonixes. The structure of th ecastle looks like it will be gorgeous as well, I can't wait to see the next step.

Last year in Intro we only had 2 hours, but then again we were graded based on a 2-hour speed peice would typically look like. I did a picture of a woman's face, I believe, but I never got it back. This year I'm in an advanced class so we have an advanced peice for our final.

Thank you, Raenia I was originally going to do dragons, but it's hard to get a stained-glass look with dragons, so I went for pheonixes instead. Those are going to be fun to paint :3

Updated with hour 3 - things are getting a bit smudged, I think it's about time for me to move on to inking the castle. After that I'll figure out where to go with the background.

Inking is seriously the scariest part about traditional media. One wrong move and everything is bleh. I'm getting used to it though, the trick is just to go slowly and carefully.

Updated with hour five I'm on a roll! I aim to get the inking finished by today, then I'll have three days to work on coloring, which is actually more time than it sounds since I should have Tuesday off and a half-day on Wednesday.

Hour six! I'm finally starting to really like how this is coming out. The textures are helping a ton, and I can't wait to keep experimenting with the stone of the castle, the wood of the front doors, and the unknown material of the globe at the top of the castle.

Time for me to take a break, though, my hand is starting to cramp up xD

How on earth do you draw like that? Silent isn't so good at drawing buildings -.- Nope, she fancies animals and dragons better.

I have to say that I don't like buildings much either, but I asked for a challenge and I got one. Silly Kay. It took me weeks to practice drawing castles. And I'll give you the same answer I give everyone - practice and determination is how I got to where I am now. It's not a magic talent that I'm magically born with, I just put a lot of work and effort into my art. I'm proud of it, too ^^
